Best Garmin Forerunner 955 Solar Review: A $600 Fitness Watch That Beats My Apple Watch

Posted on

The Garmin Forerunner 955 Solar builds on the Forerunner brand heritage with a feature-rich fitness watch capable of running 20 days on a single charge. You can even get a few extra days with this sunny model, which comes with daily workouts, training, and a new, responsive touchscreen. All of this comes at a hefty $600 price tag, but it’s the complete package considering battery life along with Garmin’s powerful fitness tracking features.

The review example I tested for two months includes the aforementioned solar feature, and the $500 non-solar Forerunner 955 is also available with many of the same features. Even if I don’t have a solar charger, the Forerunner 955 offers plenty of options to help with both my personal wellness journey and the 5K I’m working on.

The watch also has a nearly complete list of sensors to help you track your exercises, which are essential at this price, including a heart rate monitor, GPS, thermometer, and heart rate oximeter. There’s no ECG like on the $399 Apple Watch Series 7 or the $329 Fitbit Sense, but that’s not a feature that escaped me.
Honestly, the watch may be overkill, but the way it provides proactive feedback beyond tracking the activity you planned makes it a pleasure to use it and maybe even replace your Apple Watch.

  • Long battery life

I do not like

  • Solar charging probably isn’t worth the extra $100 for most people
  • There are no small options for this model
  • Quick Reply is limited to Android
  • Trusted Garmin devices with a new touchscreen
